Driving Question: How does language affect how humans interact with their environment? Students were excited and engaged in learning all the common soar words about school labeling in Chinese. They were taught many interactive lessons: scavenger hunts, four corners, roll-a-dice, and personal dictionaries. Students also walked to their assigned locations, including the office, the lobby, and the cafeteria to get insight about where they should put the labels. Furthermore, students can put their learning into practice by holding up Chinese signs whenever they walk to the cafeteria for lunch and recite the vocabulary labels in Chinese. With the goal of the project in mind, students will begin practicing their public presentations by making a poster with all the labeling signs and Chinese words. During the week of February 18th, students will learn about the specific soar words in Chinese for their assigned locations. For example, students in 3B will learn about the labels of principal and secretary in Chinese according to their assigned space, the office.
3/2/19 The project helps students to develop a sense of open-mindedness and cross-cultural understanding through Chinese labels. For example, students have learned about the traditional Chinese gender roles as reflected from the characters of “男/man” and “女/woman” . They can also share the story behind these characters through role play and storytelling. Pictures: Students are having fun making the label with foam tiles. |
