Hello MVES Families,
I can't believe that the 2nd semester is ending next week, which means we are half way through the school year. These past couple of weeks have been a little crazy with the snow and ice we have had. Grades 2-5, will be reviewing their portfolios and reflecting on their progress this year. This will be a valuable tool for both them and I so I can better curtail my lessons and is apart of the Inquiry process. Their feedback will help me plan for both the 3rd and 4th marking period. I'm currently trying a new project with my 1st graders which is based off their current PYP/IB Unit of Sharing the Planet. The kids are drawing themselves as super heroes so they can action to help save the environment. The 2nd graders are looking at the Lascaux Caves in France, and cave paintings founds on them. They will be using the traditional symbols found on the walls (Bison, Buffalo, etc) to tell a story in art. The 3rd graders are doing a quick painting inspired by the Japanese artist Hokusai and his famous woodcut known as "The Great Wave." They are learning about how Japan is made up of 4 different islands and Mt. Fuji which is a volcano that is still active today. They will then be working on a collaborative project with Mrs. Au, the EEE teacher. They will be labeling the new school using traditional Chinese symbols, which the are learning in EEE. In Art, they will be using clay and drawing the Chinese symbols onto tiles. I am so excited because all of the clay supplies have come in so we can start using the kiln and real clay in art. (Which is a first in many years). The 4th graders are finishing up their PYP/IB "How We Express Ourselves" project inspired by Wassily Kadinsky and how both music and art can inspire us. As part of the PYP/IB Unit " How We Organize Ourselves," 5th graders are creating mandalas which are traditionally made by monks. The process of making mandalas is meditative process which takes hours to create. In the Sanskrit language, Mandala means circle. Please remember the art room is on twitter at MVESArt. If you have an questions or concerns please let me know! -Ms. Black
