Driving Question: How does language affect how humans interact with their environment? Students were excited and engaged in learning all the common soar words about school labeling in Chinese. They were taught many interactive lessons: scavenger hunts, four corners, roll-a-dice, and personal dictionaries. Students also walked to their assigned locations, including the office, the lobby, and the cafeteria to get insight about where they should put the labels. Furthermore, students can put their learning into practice by holding up Chinese signs whenever they walk to the cafeteria for lunch and recite the vocabulary labels in Chinese. With the goal of the project in mind, students will begin practicing their public presentations by making a poster with all the labeling signs and Chinese words. During the week of February 18th, students will learn about the specific soar words in Chinese for their assigned locations. For example, students in 3B will learn about the labels of principal and secretary in Chinese according to their assigned space, the office.
3/2/19 The project helps students to develop a sense of open-mindedness and cross-cultural understanding through Chinese labels. For example, students have learned about the traditional Chinese gender roles as reflected from the characters of “男/man” and “女/woman” . They can also share the story behind these characters through role play and storytelling. Pictures: Students are having fun making the label with foam tiles. Our school art website on Artsonia has been updated on this snow day! Artsonia is an online art gallery, where Ms. Black photographs all the students artwork. She has tried to send emails to all parents to get permission to have your students artwork to be viewed online. Purchases with your child's work can be ordered, and a portion goes to our school. This helps me get new supplies to use in the art room with the kids. Purchases are not necessary though, but it is a great way to maintain e-portfolios. We have currently raised almost 106$ this year in funds. If you have not be contacted about Artsonia, please email Ms. Black([email protected]).
This month many of our students will be looking at artwork mad eby African Americans in celebration of Black History Month. The 1st graders are looking at Alma Woodsey Thomas, who was originally an art teacher and began to make work in her older years. The 2nd graders are writing stories to go along with their Cave Paintings as part of their current PYP/IB Unit. The 3rd graders are starting a Project Based Learning project in collaboration with Mrs. Au (EEE Teacher) and are learning the traditional Chinese Symbols for parts of the school and will be making clay tiles to be hung up around the Office, Cafeteria, and Bathrooms. The 4th graders are learning about the Underground Railroad and the significance of Harriet Tubman as she helped lead many slaves to freedom. They are creating freedom quilts using codes that were used along the Underground Railroad trail out of paper. The 5th graders are learning about the Geometric Designs painted by the women of the Ndebele Tribe in South Africa. They will be painting and doing some color theory. Tuesday, February 12th, several students from Manor View's advanced string groups spent their day at Meade High School for an all day string festival. Students from every Meade feeder elementary school were challenged to learn four songs, rehearse them during the school day, and showcase their hard work at a concert that night. This year the students worked with Mrs. Vanderwagon, the MacArthur orchestra teacher, and tackled four songs throughout the day. In years prior, the groups were only able to pull off three songs. This speaks highly of the talent of this years students. They focused, persevered, learned, and laughed throughout the day before putting on an amazing performance that night for friends and family. Thank you James, Katherine, Asher, Nicci, and Rahami for a wonderful day of music and all of your hard work. One of my favorite moments was the look on their faces that night when the high school orchestra played. Every child lit up with joy and fascination as they listened and pondered if their musical carrier will one day bring them to that level. Music is all around us, it is a form of communication and meditation, with music, great things will happen.
We recently celebrated our students who earned SOARing for 85% of their days present in the 2nd marking period. We rolled out the red carpet, literally, and had a VIP celebration party! There was music and dancing, a photo booth with a photographer, balloons, and prizes! The kids had a great time!
Now that we are into our 3rd marking period it's time for us to start planning for our next celebration! This marking period we are challenging our students to work for SOARing 90% of the days they are present to earn an invite to the next incentive party. Our goal is to encourage our students to make positive choices and begin to self monitor their behaviors. Hello MVES Families,
I can't believe that the 2nd semester is ending next week, which means we are half way through the school year. These past couple of weeks have been a little crazy with the snow and ice we have had. Grades 2-5, will be reviewing their portfolios and reflecting on their progress this year. This will be a valuable tool for both them and I so I can better curtail my lessons and is apart of the Inquiry process. Their feedback will help me plan for both the 3rd and 4th marking period. I'm currently trying a new project with my 1st graders which is based off their current PYP/IB Unit of Sharing the Planet. The kids are drawing themselves as super heroes so they can action to help save the environment. The 2nd graders are looking at the Lascaux Caves in France, and cave paintings founds on them. They will be using the traditional symbols found on the walls (Bison, Buffalo, etc) to tell a story in art. The 3rd graders are doing a quick painting inspired by the Japanese artist Hokusai and his famous woodcut known as "The Great Wave." They are learning about how Japan is made up of 4 different islands and Mt. Fuji which is a volcano that is still active today. They will then be working on a collaborative project with Mrs. Au, the EEE teacher. They will be labeling the new school using traditional Chinese symbols, which the are learning in EEE. In Art, they will be using clay and drawing the Chinese symbols onto tiles. I am so excited because all of the clay supplies have come in so we can start using the kiln and real clay in art. (Which is a first in many years). The 4th graders are finishing up their PYP/IB "How We Express Ourselves" project inspired by Wassily Kadinsky and how both music and art can inspire us. As part of the PYP/IB Unit " How We Organize Ourselves," 5th graders are creating mandalas which are traditionally made by monks. The process of making mandalas is meditative process which takes hours to create. In the Sanskrit language, Mandala means circle. Please remember the art room is on twitter at MVESArt. If you have an questions or concerns please let me know! -Ms. Black |
