Students in Ms. O'Leary's 3rd grade class met and welcomed their new class pet, Jupiter to their classroom on Friday! Students eagerly observed Jupiter as Jupiter took it easy while she calmly took in her new surroundings.
Students wrote a quick paragraph about their new class pet and a few are featured below. Stay tuned for more updates! Manor View Elementary School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from the local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of School Security at 410-222-5083.
Today in America we recognize Constitution Day! On September 17, 1787 the U.S. Constitution was ratified and signed by 39 brave men. It’s kind of like the birthday of the United States government. Our constitution outlines the rights and responsibilities of American Citizens. Many of our classes have been talking about Rights and Responsibilities in their classrooms in these first weeks of school. Throughout today and this week we will talk about our country's Constitution and why it is important. Also, as a school we will be thinking about Rights and Responsibilities. We have chart papers posted in the hallway around the courtyard identifying five rights--- Access to Clean Water, Education, Safety, Shelter and HealthCare. Students will get to decide which right they think is the most important. We will continue to discuss this throughout the week to see what we notice and wonder in our data. Which poster would YOU add your dot toand why? Here are the posters identifying five rights. One grade level has already posted their dots this morning! What do you notice and wonder about the dots?
Leave us a comment to share your thinking! The Maryland STEM Festival is featuring the connections between STEM and the Military. Military STEM careers and uses are the theme of its Annual Art Contest. Art work should focus on any of the wide variety of Military STEM careers and uses. Submissions are due 9/30. See the attached document for more information! We hope to see entries from Manor View! Contact Ms. Black for more information. ... Did we mention--- there are PRIZES?!?! :-)
Greetings from the Art room! The shelving in the art room storage closet was installed this week so it's a lot easier to find the necessary art materials that students need in order to create art. The 1st graders started to look at Piet Mondrian this week, who was a famous abstract artist. They are using color, line, and shape in order to make their own train maps. This gives them a great opportunity to learn about the primary colors, work on their gluing skills, and basic cutting. The 2nd graders ready a story called "Cat and Bird," which is inspired by the work titled " Cat and Bird" by artist Paul Klee. They are practicing how to draw basic shapes, and how to blend analogous colors with oil pastels. The 3rd graders are learning about the characteristics of what a "good citizen." This ties into the current IB/PYP theme of "Who We Are." They are choosing words that describe a good citizen and writing them to create trees inspired by Gustav Klimt's "Tree of Life." The 4th graders are looking at Spanish artist Pablo Picasso in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. We are looking at his Cubist portraits, and creating their own. This also ties into the current IB/PYP Theme of "Who We Are" because students are drawing their own characters in an abstract style. They will be creating profile descriptions for them. The 5th graders are working on expressionist self portraits in the style of Spanish artist Romero Britto as the current IB/PYP Profile them is "Who We Are." They are describing themselves with character traits and various activities they like to do.
Our students and staff did an excellent job with this morning's fire drill! As soon as they heard the announcement, they quickly and safely exited the building. They found their safe path around the construction zones and moved far from our building to ensure their safety!
Congratulations, Manor View on a very safe and orderly safety drill! |
